So who, what, where is ‘Sankofa’ – in a nutshell Sankofa is a small fair trade business in Melbourne, Australia. We import unique, handmade fair trade products from Africa and we sell them on-line and in our retail store in the very groovy suburb of Fitzroy (Melbourne).
I (Kym Pointon) started Sankofa in 2007 … but where it actually started is quite hard to pin point – consciously it started as an ‘idea’ back in 2001 while gardening … but sub-consciously was the seed sewn back in 1992 when I was given a hat from Ghana made out of kente cloth … or was it as a teenager in Christchurch (New Zealand) shopping at the Trade Aid store and hearing the message ‘trade not aid’ … or was it back at the 1974 Commonwealth Games (hosted in Chrsitchurch) when I ran into (literally) my first African that sparked an obsession with such an exotic continent (well, lion cubs mainly – I was only 8 years old).
Truth is … its probably all of these experiences that have culminated in the ‘light bulb’ moment that set this journey on its path.
